Episode 93: Roadtrip Wisdom: Are You Working the Right Way?
Brandon Schoen:
Hey everybody. Welcome back to another episode of the Profit Cleaners. I'm your host, Brandon Shane, and you are in the place to be learning from the top 1% of cleaning business owners from around the world. Guys, stick around for today's show. I've got some really cool just wisdom little proverb I wanna share with you guys. I'm actually broadcasting to you live from the one and only Outer banks,
North Carolina. So I'm here with my family right outside of Nagshead. We're just actually broadcasting you guys right outside our camper. I'm in my car right now, but just wanted to put this quick episode together for you guys because we needed some content. We've got a bunch of cool episodes coming out for you guys probably in the next week. We're gonna be recording a lot of that.
But yeah, guys just wanted, I told you guys I'd do a little update while I was on this road trip last time I dropped in on you guys. We had, we were down in the southern part of the United States, Texas New Mexico, Colorado, and we've driven like another 15 states since then. We've been on an epic road trip with the family.
Yeah, guys, just wanted to share some, it's really been cool, gotten some great perspective and just had some time to think about the business. And I wanted to share with you guys a proverb today because this is kind of something that again came about and I wanted to just, it was just impactful to me. I think a lot of times as entrepreneurs,
we get burned out. It's easy to get frustrated, get angry, get upset, feel like we're just spinning our wheels, which a lot of you guys are actually, and I've been there too, spinning my wheels, feeling like just frustrated, like, we're not getting where we want to go. So I wanted to share, you guys just encourage you guys as well.
But this is a proverb my wife actually shared with me this week and I, lemme pull it up here on my phone. And this kind of reminds me going back to like one of an earlier podcasts that we had or shared with you guys about strategy and about climbing up the tree and finding where you should be chopping in the jungle. So I'll talk about that more in a second,
but just listen to this proverb for a sec guys. I feel like a lot of you could benefit from hearing this. So there's a tale of an old wise man who came across a younger feller sawing feverishly at a large oak tree in the woods. The old man asked, what are you doing son? The young fella barks, impatiently at the old wise man.
He says, I must saw down this tree and make it home all before dark. That's quite a load of work you've got there. The wise man replied, I have been at it for over five hours and still have so much yet to do. So after having a look at the man's sweat soaked shirt and a dull blade of the saw w wedged in the tree,
the wise man suggested, maybe you oughta have a break sharpen that saw regain your strength and stamina. I'm sure it would go a lot faster if you did. The young feller says, well, I don't have time to sharpen the saw. I'm too busy sawing says the fool emphatically. So this is the parable for the way many of us attack life,
unfortunately, and many of us as entrepreneurs, how we attack our businesses is we're just working, working, working away. And I've found myself doing this a lot of times guys as well. So I'm guilty of this as well. But Guys, when have you been sharpening your ax? When have you been doubling down on new knowledge, on new skills,
on improving your business, improving your personal, you know, abilities, whatever that is, so that you can constantly be making progress, right? Progress equals happiness. And guys, are you taking time instead of just cleaning all the time instead of just running your business all the time? Are you taking time to rest? Are you taking time to regain your strength and your stamina and to sharpen your sauce,
sharpen your ax because you can keep chopping and a lot of you guys are just chopping away and you look busy, right? It's fun to look busy, but if you're not actually being effective, that's the difference, right? Being busy is one thing, but being effective. We talked about this before guys on the podcast as well. And so yeah,
just taking this time that I've had to be on this trip with my family, we're currently in the outer banks and the beach right now. Just having that time to sharpen my saw, to regain my strength after the last five years building this business. And you know, don't get me wrong, I've taken time. This isn't my first time off for vacation,
but guys, it is so important to recharge and to recalibrate your systems and your and your business. And one of the ways you do that is by building systems, right? If you want to truly create an empire, a legacy that you can sell someday or you can leave to your family, that's an actual true business, a true legacy that you can leave behind that will grow and will buy you many,
many other things and houses and freedom and time, all the things that you want in life. That's why you start a business. Let's just get down to it right now, guys. The bottom line is we wanna make Profit, we wanna get rich here, right? And I know that makes it sounds a little weird to some of you guys, but that's the truth,
right? Is we want freedom and we wanna make a lot of money and you wanna serve a lot of people obviously can't affect make a lot of money unless you affect a lot of people. But getting back to just how are you doing and how are you, are you taking the time to sharpen your ax? Then the other part of that guys is kind of another cool proverb or another story on the other side of that is that I've heard recently was,
you know, you want to run to the airplane, but once you get on the airplane, you know that's one thing is if you're gonna run to the airplane, but once you get on it, don't keep running, right? Cause the airplane is the system, the airplane is the thing that's gonna take you the rest of the way. And that's what you're working towards,
right? That's what you're hopefully duplicating yourself, replicating yourself. If you're cleaning still, you should be replicating yourself, duplicating that system out, hiring, delegating that out. Same with all the systems in your business. And if you truly sat down and just took a look at what you're doing on the day to day, and this is what Brandon and I did early on when we were doing clockwork,
we were working through that book, you just take a week and you analyze what you do every single day and what are you doing to move the needle in your business? What are you doing that is actually bringing in revenue, that's actually growing your business and effectively growing your business. Not just busy work, not just get doing the day to day to get by,
start thinking bigger And start thinking, you know, maybe you need to take a little break, take a weekend, take a day to yourself to just rest, recharge, recalibrate, and sharpen that axe and bring your game face to the game. Bring your game, your new game to the game. And after you're, you know, not frustrated or you're not tired,
you're not just spinning your wheels and start actually working on that strategy. We talked about guys, that's from like an early, early podcast. We talked about this plane that went down. This is a true story. It went down in the jungle. All the guys get out and start chopping with their machetes, and I think it was the smarter scientist or whoever it was on the airplane,
actually climbed up a tree and pointed out and said, guys, you're chopping in the wrong direction. Like the town is that way. Like we need to chop that way. And that's strategy guys. And that's when you take a step back when you climb up the tree, when you give yourself a little time to sharpen that ax, that's what that allows you to do is you think better,
you think more clearly, you make better decisions and things come together a lot better and you're gonna make more progress. But again guys, it's just want to encourage you guys, like on the journey, you guys are out there working hard in your businesses, whether you're still cleaning, whether you're working on the higher level parts of your business. I just wanna encourage you guys to build those systems,
right? Build that airplane that's gonna take you the rest of the way. And when you finally do have some of those systems built, let that airplane take you the rest of the way. Don't keep running on the airplane, right? Like get on the airplane and let it take you there. And that's the point of those systems. Systems equal freedom.
And that's what we're trying to build here guys. This is a business that will give you freedom, that will give you time, that will make you rich, that will leave a legacy for you and your family. So you can build an empire. That's what we're doing with Profit Cleaners, that's what we're doing with our cleaning business as we expand, as we grow,
as we share what's working, what's not working for our business so that you guys can all benefit from this and we can all win together guys. So that's it for today's podcast. Just a short one today guys. But I just wanna share that parable with you guys. It was impactful to me and I know sometimes a lot of times actually as entrepreneurs we get bogged down.
We feel like we're spinning our wheels, we get frustrated and feels like things aren't working sometimes. But I want to encourage you guys, continue to do the work on a daily basis. Do your simple five things or three things or whatever it is that you can take action on to move your business forward, move that needle on your business forward. And if you're doing stuff that's just busy work,
that's not really, if you haven't delegated that stuff out yet, start delegating that and start working on the stuff that's gonna drive new business, that's gonna create new revenue, okay? That's going to actually cutting the right direction and creating that right strategy for your business so you can grow that brand. So like I said, guys, stay tuned. We've got a lot of cool episodes coming up.
We're still putting together some interviews and things like that and keep the show more fun and interesting. But thank you guys for sticking around and thank you guys for continue to hustle and grow your businesses alongside us. Just super grateful and happy to have you guys along for the ride. And we've got lots of new things coming on the horizon, lots of new growth in our business that we wanna share with you guys.
So stay tuned and if you guys are getting value outta this show, ask you guys to pay the fee, share it out, tell a friend, leave us a review. Like it, you know, whatever you can do to help guys is a huge, huge part of why we do the show and we don't run commercials and ads. So we can give you guys great content.
So that's it for the show today, guys. Make sure to sharpen your ax, make sure to strategize and make sure to build those systems so you can run to that airplane, get on that airplane and let it take you to freedom. Hopefully you guys can be taking a trip to the beach soon with your family or whatever that is, that dream or that goal is for you getting some of that time back.
I just wanna encourage you guys, it is possible and been meeting a lot of cool cleaning business owners out in the road. So I'm gonna share with that more with you guys in the future here. But just wanna let you guys know that it is worth every moment, you know, the effort you're gonna put in building your business it's worth in the long run.
So just stick through it guys, continue taking that action every day and you will see results and it will all pay off, I promise. Just keep going. In the meantime, guys, keep it clean.
